After a tense goalless draw across 120 minutes, the last-16 tie was decided from the penalty spot. Both teams struggled to find attacking rhythm during normal time, but the pressure reached another level when their World Cup dreams came down to one kick at a time.
Colombia, who suffered shootout heartbreak against England in 2018, were left devastated once again. Davinson Sanchez struck the underside of the crossbar, while Switzerland also had a scare when Manuel Akanji missed his attempt.

The decisive moment arrived when Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel denied Cucho Hernandez, giving Ruben Vargas the chance to become the hero. Vargas stayed calm and converted the winning penalty to send Switzerland into a historic quarter-final meeting with Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
It was an incredible moment for Vargas, who had only been fit enough to start the match on the bench before entering late in extra time.
The match itself produced few clear chances. Colombia hit the woodwork through Jhon Lucumi, while Switzerland threatened through Zeki Amdouni and other late opportunities.
Switzerland were without injured rising star Johan Manzambi, who had been one of their standout performers earlier in the tournament. Despite that setback, Murat Yakin’s side found a way to survive and continue their remarkable journey.
For Colombia, it was another painful ending. Veteran James Rodriguez made history by earning a record 131st appearance for his country, but he was unable to inspire the breakthrough his team needed.
Now Switzerland prepare for one of the biggest challenges in their football history — a showdown with defending champions Argentina and Lionel Messi.
