Lady Louise Windsor has rounded off a memorable week with another deeply personal milestone, receiving her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award from her father, Prince Edward, at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.

The 22-year-old royal, who graduated from the University of St Andrews just one day earlier, looked delighted as the Duke of Edinburgh presented her with the prestigious award during a reception for young people from Scotland and the north of England.

It was a particularly meaningful moment for the Edinburgh family. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was founded by Louise’s late grandfather, Prince Philip, in 1956, and Prince Edward has spent decades championing the scheme in his role as patron.

Duchess Sophie was also there to support her daughter, appearing proud and emotional as the family posed together. Louise was joined as well by Felix da Silva-Clamp, her university boyfriend, who sat beside her as the Duke delivered his speech.

The ceremony came immediately after Louise’s graduation celebrations at St Andrews, where she completed a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and International Relations. New official portraits showed the young royal smiling in her graduation gown and proudly holding her certificate.

According to Buckingham Palace, Louise is now preparing to take a gap year before deciding on her next step. Her plans are said to include a mixture of work, volunteering and travel, though officials are not commenting further on her long-term career ambitions.

The decision places Louise in a familiar royal tradition. Prince William, Princess Kate, Prince Harry and Zara Tindall all took time to travel, volunteer or work before settling into the next chapters of their lives.

For Louise, the timing has only increased public interest in her future. She has often been described as humble, disciplined and grounded, with admirers pointing to her part-time job at a garden centre before university and her low-key approach to royal life.

The King’s niece has also drawn attention for her connection to the military. Reports have suggested she became heavily involved with Army Cadets while at St Andrews and may one day consider a military path, which would make her the first senior female royal in decades to follow that route.

Her close bond with the late Queen has also shaped how many royal watchers see her. Like Queen Elizabeth II, Louise is known for her love of horses and carriage driving, and commentators have noted a quiet steadiness that reminds them of the young monarch.

Louise and her younger brother James, Earl of Wessex, were raised without using HRH titles, despite being entitled to them. Their parents wanted them to understand that they would likely need to work for a living and build their own paths.

That approach appears to have shaped Louise’s public image. She has avoided the spotlight for much of her youth, but recent appearances have sparked renewed discussion about whether she could one day support Prince William’s slimmed-down monarchy.

For now, however, the focus is on family pride. After graduating, receiving her Gold Award, and preparing for a year of new experiences, Lady Louise is stepping into adulthood with a rare mix of royal heritage and everyday humility.

Whether her future leads to public duties, military service, further study or a private career, her latest milestone has reinforced why many see her as one of the Royal Family’s most quietly compelling young figures.
