Prince Harry’s return to Britain has been hit by another dramatic twist after plans for him to stay at Buckingham Palace reportedly fell apart at the last moment.
The Duke of Sussex is due in the UK for a series of charity engagements linked to the Invictus Games, with stops expected in London and Birmingham. But what had looked like a possible softening between Harry and the royal household has quickly turned into another public row.
According to reports, Harry’s team said he had accepted an invitation to stay at a royal residence during his visit.
But shortly afterwards, Buckingham Palace appeared to push back, saying the offer was no longer available.
The dispute now centres on timing, security and royal protocol.
Reports suggest Harry did not formally confirm the accommodation arrangement by the required deadline, after spending time making private security plans for the trip. By the time he was ready to accept, the palace is said to have decided that the necessary staffing and arrangements could no longer be put in place at short notice.
The situation has been made even more sensitive by a court ruling expected during Harry’s visit in his legal case involving Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail.
Harry’s spokesperson is said to be disappointed by the decision, arguing that the palace already knew about the timing of the judgment and that the offer had been accepted.
For royal watchers, the collapse of the palace stay feels symbolic.
Harry has repeatedly said he wants to repair relationships with his family, but almost every UK visit now seems to arrive with a fresh complication.
Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will not join him in London, though reports have suggested they may still appear later during the Birmingham part of the trip.
