Johnny Ball — a name that shaped the childhood of millions across the UK — is now touching hearts once again, but this time for a very different reason.
At 87, the beloved TV presenter and father of Zoe Ball has opened up with heartbreaking honesty about his battle with prostate cancer — and the reality he now faces.

In a candid reflection, Johnny admitted something few are ever ready to say out loud: he believes he “doesn’t have long left.”
The diagnosis, which came in August 2022, changed everything.
Although he underwent radiotherapy and is now considered to be “doing fine,” Johnny’s perspective on life has shifted in a profound way. He is not denying the truth — but he is choosing how to face it.
“I’ve been kicked in the teeth in every possible way by life,” he said. “But I still cannot help but smile.”

Standing beside him is his wife Dianne — his partner of more than 50 years — along with the simple, grounding things that matter most: his home, his dog, and the life he has built.
“I have my wife, my life… and I’m very happy,” he said. “At 87, I’m still fit — and that’s a gift.”
But behind that quiet optimism are deeply difficult conversations.
Johnny revealed that he and his wife had, at one point, been forced to confront a painful question: was this the end?
It was a moment filled with fear, uncertainty, and raw emotion.
Yet after reassurance from doctors and successful treatment, Johnny was given something he didn’t take for granted — more time.

He describes it as “a wonderful relief.”
“By rights, I don’t have long left,” he admitted. “And I want to spend that time with a smile on my face.”
Those words have resonated deeply with fans.
Not because they are filled with despair…
But because they are filled with peace.
Johnny has refused to let illness define him. He continues to live with purpose — maintaining a simple daily routine that includes exercise, healthy eating, and small moments of joy.
Even now, he remains active and creative, preparing to release a new memoir — a reflection of a life that refuses to be reduced to a diagnosis.
Family remains at the centre of everything.
Johnny is a father of three and a grandfather to six grandchildren, including Zoe Ball’s son, Woody. But recent years have also brought deep loss. In April 2024, Zoe’s mother, Julia, passed away from pancreatic cancer — a tragedy that has only deepened Johnny’s reflections on life.
Through it all, he has chosen acceptance over fear.
Gratitude over regret.

And love over everything else.
Johnny Ball’s story is not just about illness.
It is about how we choose to live when we know time is limited.
And perhaps that is what makes his words so powerful.
Because in the face of uncertainty, he has chosen something simple — yet incredibly difficult:
To smile.
Even when the road ahead is short. 🕊️💔
