Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were reportedly banned from speaking to their cousins after a âfalling outâ. It came after Princess Diana reportedly declared them âpersona non grataâ after a disagreement with Sarah Ferguson.
Royal author Tina Brown described the York sisters as Prince William and Prince Harryâs âfavouriteâ cousins in her 2022 book, The Palace Papers. Fergie however is said to have fallen out with Diana after claiming âshe had developed verrucae after borrowing her shoesâ. According to The Times, it was one of the early moments the sisters realised âfamilies are not always happyâ.

It reports: âOn top of their parentsâ divorce, they were banned from seeing their cousins William and Harry after Princess Diana fell out with Fergie over a verruca. (Fergie claimed sheâd got one from borrowing Dianaâs shoes.)â
According to WomanandHome, the incident was part of Dianaâs âpattern of cutting out peopleâ from the young princeâs lives. Brown says this was something that âcontinued throughout their childhoodâ.
The author claims that their mother âalways needed to be first in her boysâ heartsâ. She says that while Diana was âclearly devotedâ to the young princes, there was a âdestructive side to her motheringâ.
Beatrice and Eugenie meanwhile have had a tumultuous time in the Royal Family. Their parents split in 1996, but remained close friends, often being described as the âhappiest divorced couple in the worldâ.

However Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah have faced continued scrutiny over their friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in 2019. Andrewâs friendship with Epstein saw him take part in a disastrous Newsnight interview in 2019.
Beatrice was reportedly âleft in tearsâ after the interview, which she is said to have helped organise. Former producer Sam McAlister claims Beatrice was an âunexpected guestâ in the discussions ahead of the programme.
She revealed that Beatrice posed âsensible questionsâ about the suggestions from Newsnight staff and later sympathised with the princess as her father âdiscussed his relationshipâ with Epstein.
According to the Mail on Sunday, Beatrice hosted a birthday dinner for her then-fiancĂ©, now husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi shortly after the interview was broadcast. The source mentioned she was âquite tearful at timesâ.

They added: âIn fact, Beatrice has been in tears every day since the interview went out.â
Since then Andrew has been stripped of his royal titles and military patronages and been forced to leave his Royal Lodge home. The former Duke of York shared the 30-room mansion with Sarah.

Sarah and Andrew are said to turn to their daughter when making public decisions. A source told the Mail on Sunday: âBoth Sarah and Andrew rely on Beatriceâs judgement a lot when it comes to dealing with the public as sheâs got an old head on young shoulders. You canât really blame Beatrice because I think the odds were stacked against her on this one.â
It comes as Beatrice, 37, and Eugenie, 36, are set to miss the Royal Family Easter service this weekend. The York sisters have made alternative plans away from Windsor, but have not been âfrozen outâ from the service.
