Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a night of pure history as Portugal swept aside Uzbekistan 5-0 in Group K at the 2026 World Cup.
After the frustration of Portugal’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their opening match, all eyes were on Ronaldo. The 41-year-old captain had been questioned, criticised and placed under pressure to prove that he could still decide matches on the biggest stage.
It took him only six minutes to answer.
João Cancelo raced forward down the right and sent a dangerous ball across the box. Ronaldo arrived with perfect timing, finishing from close range to give Portugal the lead and spark wild celebrations among the Portuguese fans.
That goal alone was historic. Ronaldo became the first player ever to score at six different World Cups, stretching his incredible record from 2006 to 2026.
Portugal did not stop there. Nuno Mendes doubled the lead with a clever free-kick in the 17th minute, catching Uzbekistan’s goalkeeper and defensive wall off guard as they focused too heavily on Ronaldo.
Then came another landmark moment.
In the 39th minute, Bruno Fernandes created the chance and Ronaldo finished clinically across goal to make it 3-0. With that strike, Ronaldo reached 10 World Cup goals for Portugal, moving past Eusébio’s legendary record of nine and becoming his country’s all-time leading scorer at the tournament.
Uzbekistan briefly thought they had responded, but Azizjon Ganiev’s effort was ruled out after a VAR review. Portugal stayed in control, and the second half brought more damage. An own goal added a fourth before Rafael Leão completed the 5-0 rout late on.
It was more than a win. It was a statement.
Portugal rediscovered their confidence, Roberto Martínez’s side moved closer to the knockout rounds, and Ronaldo once again turned criticism into history.
