The presenters of BBC Breakfast celebrated a significant achievement on Tuesday.

During the latest instalment (May 19) of the popular breakfast show, Sally Nugent and Jon Kay were back at the Salford studio to bring viewers the most important stories from Britain and beyond.

Later into the programme, the duo shared some “exciting” news about their former colleague Carol Kirkwood. The much-loved weather forecaster famously departed BBC Breakfast last month, after 28 years with the corporation.

Carol has now secured a place on the National Television Awards longlist, and the morning show itself has also received recognition.

Announcing the news on this morning’s BBC Breakfast, Jon stated: “We’ve heard this morning that two documentaries made by the BBC Breakfast team have been nominated in the National Television Awards longlist,”

Two individuals are seated on a red couch, likely engaged in a television broadcast. The person on the left dons a blue suit and tie, while the individual on the right is dressed in a cream-colored outfit. Both are attentively looking at papers on the table in front of them, with a backdrop featuring an urban skyline.

Sally went on: “Our Girls: The Southport Families, a one-hour documentary hearing from the parents of Alice da Silva Aguiar, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Bebe King, has been nominated in the Authored Documentary category.”

Jon added: “And Sir Chris Hoy: Cancer, Courage and Me, filmed with the cyclist and his family is also a contender in the same category.”

Discussing Carol’s achievement, Sally remarked: “There’s also some exciting news for our friend, Carol – Carol Kirkwood. Just a month after she switched off the alarm clock, she has been nominated as Best TV Presenter, recognising more than 25 years on the television.”

Jon continued: “25 years of commitment to umbrellas, wet weather gear,” before Sally interjected: “If she was here, she’d actually say 28. Why are we always saying more than 25? It’s 28.”

Jon wrapped up: “Good luck to Carol, [and] to the documentaries. BBC Breakfast, itself, is in the Daytime category as well.”

Carol left BBC Breakfast last month

Back in January, Carol confirmed that she was leaving BBC Breakfast, explaining she wanted to explore the world and dedicate more time to her husband, Steve Randall.

Carol’s final broadcast was on April 1, with the presenter delivering an emotional farewell message on live television.

Bringing the show to a close, she addressed viewers: “Thank you for trusting me, be it telling you about heatwaves or snow, to the everyday question of, ‘Do I need to take a brolly?’

“To my colleagues past and present, both in front and behind the camera, I owe you all so much. You’ve been my team, my safety net, and, very often, my family. We’ve shared breaking news, long shifts, plenty of laughter, bad hair days, and the occasional moment of pure chaos. And do you know what? I wouldn’t change a second of it.”
