Stephen Colbert and his wife, Evelyn “Evie” McGee Colbert, have been married for more than 30 years, but their love story did not begin with the kind of instant spark fans might imagine.
During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, the couple looked back on the early stages of their relationship and admitted that their first meetings were far from magical. In fact, Stephen joked that the first couple of times they crossed paths, the connection simply “did not take.” PEOPLE reported that the two both grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, and first met when they were younger, but romance did not immediately follow.
Stephen recalled that they were introduced at a party during college by a mutual friend from Charleston. But the meeting was not exactly smooth. He described himself as “chemically impaired” at the time and jokingly remembered Evie as a “distant frost queen on a mountain top.” When Andy Cohen asked whether he liked that cold energy, Stephen was honest: not at first. He said his first impression was that the conversation was “going nowhere” and that it may have lasted only about 30 seconds.
Evie’s memory of Stephen was just as blunt — and funny. When asked what she thought of him early on, she laughed and described him as an “immature, skinny boy.” For fans used to seeing Colbert as polished, thoughtful and deeply devoted to his wife, the honesty of that recollection made the story even sweeter.
