Prince and Princess of Wales discuss the age-old scone debate

Prince William may have tried to settle a controversial debate when it comes to scones, jam and cream. But now Meghan Markle has waded into the discussion, revealing the order she spreads on the jam and cream.

It came after brother-in-law William appeared on Heart Breakfast on Friday, where he was presented with a plate of scones, with clotted cream and a jar of jam.

The age-old debate over scones seems to have some argue that the cream should be spread on the scone first, then the jam, which is the Devon way, while others say it should be the other way around, known as the Cornish way.

When asked which way was best, he replied: “I love that I’m the authority on scones. I can only tell you what I learned from my grandmother. And she would definitely, she had the cream on first. Cream on first, jam on top.”

And while that may have been the end of the debate, it seems the Duchess of Sussex has reignited it after revealing her position – and it’s the same as the royals.

On her lifestyle brand As Ever Instagram account, she shared a video showing freshly-made scones with the cream having been spread on first. A jar of Meghan’s raspberry spread then appears with a spoon full of jam then placed on top.

The caption read: “Memorial weekend plans. Baking warm scones topped with our Strawberry or Raspberry Spread, Orange Blossom Honey, and Flower Sprinkles.”

However, it seems William and Meghan’s preference might be different to that of the Princess of Wales. Back in 2023, both William and Kate attended a tea party held to celebrate 75 years of the NHS. The couple helped add the finishing touches to cupcakes and helped lay tables at the reception.

At the party, they chatted to TV presenter Mel Giedroyc, and William asked where they stood on the debate.

Mel told them: “I think I always do jam then cream as it’s a bit heavier” to which Kate added: “I always do jam and then cream.” While William at that time joked: “I do whichever is closest to me.”

Back in 2020, Elizabeth II’s former chef Darren McGrady revealed the secret behind the scones that are baked at Buckingham Palace.

He explained: “The Queen would have plain scones one day, and fruit scones the next, with raisins and sultanas.

“She would always have afternoon tea wherever she was in the world. I remember being on the Royal Yacht Britannia, we flew out to Australia, and it was like 5 o’clock in the morning, but to the Queen it was 5 o’clock in the afternoon, so my first job was making scones.”
