For weeks, viewers had been asking the same question:Â where was Gloria?
Now, Gloria Hunniford, 85, has finally revealed the alarming medical emergency that forced her to step away from Loose Women â admitting doctors feared she could âkeel over at any time.â
The broadcaster returned to the ITV panel on Wednesday and, for the first time, explained why she had vanished from screens â confessing that what began as something routine quickly turned into something far more serious.
âMy Health Was Evolvingâ
Speaking candidly on the show, Gloria told viewers that her health had been quietly deteriorating for nearly a month before she went into hospital.
âFor about four weeks, my health was evolving,â she explained.
âI went into hospital just to have a routine operation â something I knew about and had instigated myself.â
But once doctors began examining her, the situation changed dramatically.
âLike Draculaâ: Rushed Blood Transfusions
Medical staff soon discovered that Gloria was suffering from what they described as a âprofoundâ condition.
âIt turned out â in the hospitalâs words â that I was profoundly anaemic,â she revealed.
âI had to have, like Dracula, three pints of blood. A pint of the strong stuff.â
Doctors also delivered a stark warning about her dangerously low blood pressure.
âThey said my blood pressure was in the 70s, rather than over 100,â Gloria recalled.
âSo you could keel over at any time.â
The revelation stunned both viewers and her fellow panellists.
âSomewhere, Youâre Losing Bloodâ
Following the transfusions, Gloria spent weeks rebuilding her strength while doctors searched for the underlying cause.
âOne of the doctors said, âSomewhere, youâre losing blood,ââ she said.
âAnd then you start to panic.â
Further tests finally uncovered the problem.
âThey put a camera down my throat just over a week ago,â Gloria explained,
âand they discovered I have an ulcer.â
She added that she was reassured after being told the condition is âfixable.â
A Difficult Chapter After Personal Loss
Gloriaâs health scare comes after an emotionally devastating few years, following the death of her husband Stephen Way in 2024, aged 85.
Previously speaking on Loose Women, Gloria had tearfully reflected on caring for Stephen through his illness.
âYou want to do everything you can for the person you love,â she said at the time.
âBut itâs exhausting because youâre worried all the time.â
She also admitted that even when loss is expected, it never hurts less.
âEven if you think youâre prepared,â she said,
âwhen it happens, itâs still such a shock â and such pain.â
Back on Screen â And Grateful
Now back in her seat on the panel, Gloria reassured fans that she is recovering â but her brutally honest account has left many shaken, emotional, and full of admiration.
What appeared to be a quiet absence turned out to be a serious health ordeal, handled largely out of the spotlight.
And as she resumes her place on screen, viewers are being reminded just how fragile â and resilient â life can be.
