Now, Gloria Hunniford, 85, has finally revealed the alarming medical emergency that forced her to step away from Loose Women — admitting doctors feared she could “keel over at any time.”

The broadcaster returned to the ITV panel on Wednesday and, for the first time, explained why she had vanished from screens — confessing that what began as something routine quickly turned into something far more serious.

“My Health Was Evolving”

Speaking candidly on the show, Gloria told viewers that her health had been quietly deteriorating for nearly a month before she went into hospital.

“For about four weeks, my health was evolving,” she explained.
“I went into hospital just to have a routine operation — something I knew about and had instigated myself.”

But once doctors began examining her, the situation changed dramatically.

‘Like Dracula’: Rushed Blood Transfusions

Medical staff soon discovered that Gloria was suffering from what they described as a “profound” condition.

“It turned out — in the hospital’s words — that I was profoundly anaemic,” she revealed.
“I had to have, like Dracula, three pints of blood. A pint of the strong stuff.”

Doctors also delivered a stark warning about her dangerously low blood pressure.

“They said my blood pressure was in the 70s, rather than over 100,” Gloria recalled.
“So you could keel over at any time.”

The revelation stunned both viewers and her fellow panellists.

“Somewhere, You’re Losing Blood”

Following the transfusions, Gloria spent weeks rebuilding her strength while doctors searched for the underlying cause.

“One of the doctors said, ‘Somewhere, you’re losing blood,’” she said.
“And then you start to panic.”

Further tests finally uncovered the problem.

“They put a camera down my throat just over a week ago,” Gloria explained,
“and they discovered I have an ulcer.”

She added that she was reassured after being told the condition is “fixable.”

A Difficult Chapter After Personal Loss

Gloria’s health scare comes after an emotionally devastating few years, following the death of her husband Stephen Way in 2024, aged 85.

Previously speaking on Loose Women, Gloria had tearfully reflected on caring for Stephen through his illness.

“You want to do everything you can for the person you love,” she said at the time.
“But it’s exhausting because you’re worried all the time.”

She also admitted that even when loss is expected, it never hurts less.

“Even if you think you’re prepared,” she said,
“when it happens, it’s still such a shock — and such pain.”

Now back in her seat on the panel, Gloria reassured fans that she is recovering — but her brutally honest account has left many shaken, emotional, and full of admiration.
