An iconic actor has died, which has left the film world completely shaken after news of his sudden passing spread and heartfelt tributes were shared online

A well-loved actor has sadly died at the age of 61. Irish performer Gary Lyndon, who starred in The Banshees of Inisherin, passed suddenly leaving fans in disbelief.

The IFTA winner took on his mother’s maiden name when he began acting and has previously appeared in both stage and screen productions. He enjoyed a three-decade long career and regularly worked with Billy Roche.

The Wexford man is known for his Wexford trilogy in the 80s. In recent times, film fans will recognise him as Garda Peadar Kearney, the father of Barry Keoghan’s character Dominic Kearney, in the Oscar-nominated movie The Banshees of Inisherin.

He became well-known in Ireland as Patrick Murray in RTE’s The Clinic from 2003 to 2009, as well as Pure Mule and Love/Hate. On the silver screen, he starred alongside Saoirse Ronan in Brooklyn. He also appeared in War Horse, The Guard and Calvary.

Gary’s final stage appearance was in Of Mornington with his son James. News of his death has rocked the acting industry and The Picture House – Wexford Film Society paid tribute.

They said: “Shocking news this morning that actor Gary Lydon has died suddenly at the age of 61.”

“Gary, who starred in three Best Picture Oscar nominated films, The Banshees of Inisherin, Brooklyn and Spielberg’s War Horse received our Fellowship award in 2014.”

“We’ve screened a number of his films over the years, the most recent one being Lakelands in 2024. Only a few weeks ago he told us about a couple of films he’s completed, The Sandy Banks and One Sweet Hour, where he has the lead role of an ageing Elvis impersonator.

“At least we’ll have those to look forward to. Our deepest condolences go to his family and many friends. Rest in peace Gary.”
