Queen Camilla’s ‘calming effect’ on King Charles amid 77th birthday celebrations
King Charles will celebrate his 77th birthday with Trooping the Colour on Saturday (June 13th), and he’ll have his wife, Queen Camilla, by his side throught it all
King Charles is officially marking his 77th birthday this weekend, and he’ll undoubtedly have his beloved wife, Queen Camilla, right by his side. The monarch’s actual birthday fell in November last year, but he will officially celebrate the occasion on Saturday (June 13) with Trooping the Colour, a ceremony that has commemorated the official birthday of the British monarch for more than 260 years.
Charles’ birthday festivities come during a challenging few years on the throne for the King, who took over following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, in 2022. Not only has he had to grieve for both his mother and father, but he also revealed he had been diagnosed with cancer in 2024, and more recently has faced the difficult task of stripping his brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, of his royal titles.
Throughout these turbulent times, the one unwavering constant in King Charles‘ life has been his wife, Queen Camilla, who has been a tremendous pillar of support ever since the pair wed in 2005.
The 78-year-old Queen Consort has previously been described as a “calming force” for her husband, with royal biographer Christopher Wilson, who examined the couple in his book A Greater Love, claiming that Camilla soothes Charles in a way that nobody else can.
He said: “Her presence reassures him. Despite all the trappings of majesty, it’s cold and lonely at the top, and it’s easy to see the comfort she provides him.”
Camilla also helps inject a touch of lightness into royal duties, according to royal photographer Arthur Edwards, who previously said the Queen knows how to make her spouse “laugh”.
He explained: “She never lost her common touch. She makes him laugh. When something triggers them, you see them just laughing together. They do things with such enthusiasm.”
Body language expert Darren Stanton has also previously discussed the physical connection the couple shares, suggesting it’s evident how reliant King Charles is on his wife.
He said: “They have the same passion for each other still to this day. During public events, Charles is often looking around and fidgeting when Camilla isn’t by his side, which shows how dependent he is on her.
“But when they are together, we see this genuine laughter shared between them with engaged eye contact, and this shows how they are on the same page emotionally.
“When he was a young Prince, we rarely saw him display a relaxed nature. Camilla brings that side out of him where he can be himself, let go and just enjoy his time as King.”
The Royal Family will gather for one of the most significant occasions in the royal calendar this Saturday (June 13) when Trooping the Colour takes place. Several members of the royal family will participate in the procession before the family makes their way to Buckingham Palace, where they will appear on the balcony to wave to enthusiastic onlookers.
It is anticipated that the King and Queen will be joined on the balcony by the Prince and Princess of Wales, along with their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are also expected to be in attendance, as are Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and the Duke of Kent.
The balcony line-up for Trooping the Colour has remained unchanged since 2023, when the King made his first appearance as monarch.
