‘I was at party with Sarah Ferguson and had to calm her down when she went charging’
A former friend of Sarah Ferguson, the ex-Duchess of York, has told how she set off ‘charging’ after a waiter at a Christmas party before she had to be calmed down
The wedding of Sarah Ferguson and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was watched by an estimated global television audience of 500 million people. But today, says royal commentator Andrew Pierce, Sarah âis a nobody, she doesnât exist.â
The former Duchess of Yorkâs fall from grace has been largely due to the alleged indiscretions of a husband that she continued to live with for almost 30 years after their divorce. While Sarah did try to achieve some measure of financial independence after splitting from Andrew, exploiting her royal connections to advertise innumerable products in the US, she has always struggled with debt.
On the Suddenly Single podcast, GB News presenter Andrew explained: âShe is a reckless spender. That’s her problem.â He highlighted the fact that, according to an entry in the infamous Epstein files, her debts at one point were in the region of ÂŁ45million.
He adds that Sarah is an extremely generous gift-giver but is also highly impulsive, offering as an example the story of bumping into her at a Christmas party thrown by an immensely wealthy couple in Londonâs exclusive Lowndes Square.
âAll sorts of posh people there,â Andrew recalled. âSarah Ferguson was there and then a waiter in all his finery walked past with a tray of drinks. Sarah Ferguson went charging after him as if to get some wine. And I said, âSarah, you’re not going to run out of alcohol in this party. There’s going to be enough for all of us. It’s got the one of the finest wine cellars in Londonâ.â
But there wonât be many Christmas party invitations for Sarah this year, Andrew adds as she was absent from the very same party last Christmas. He said: âShe has taken herself off the social circuit completely. Sheâs hanging her head in shame.â
While many of Sarahâs problems stem from her ex-husbandâs association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, although Andrew has always firmly denied any allegations levelled at him.
But she has her own share of the shame, with documents recently unsealed by the US Department of Justice revealing extensive email exchanges between Sarah and Epstein. In the mails, she repeatedly begs for handouts â at one point asking for ÂŁ20,000 to âpay her rentâ while on another occasion she devised a job for herself as his housekeeper, suggesting a starting salary of ÂŁ250,000.
In one 2010 message she reportedly wrote to Epstein: “You are a legend… I am at your service. Just marry me.”
A year later, speaking to the London Evening Standard, Sarah publicly disowned the man she once described as the brother she always wished for, saying her friendship with him had been a âgigantic error of judgmentâ.
But within weeks of that statement, a message from Sarah to Epstein later published by the Mail on Sunday contradicted that statement, She told the convicted sex offender: âI know you feel hellaciously let down by me from what you were either told or read and I must humbly apologise to you and your heart for that.â
A spokesperson for the duchess told the Guardian that the email had been written out of fear that Epstein might sue her for defamation. âThe duchess spoke of her regret about her association with Epstein many years ago, and as they have always been, her first thoughts are with his victims,â they said.
The spokesperson added that Sarah stood by her public condemnation of Epstein. They added: âLike many people, she was taken in by his lies. As soon as she was aware of the extent of the allegations against him, she not only cut off contact but condemned him publicly, to the extent that he then threatened to sue her for defamation for associating him with paedophilia.â
