Manchester United have made their first major move of the summer by completing the signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal worth up to GBP50million.
The 22-year-old has agreed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, running until June 2031, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement by a further year. The deal is understood to be worth an initial GBP48million, with another GBP2million potentially due in add-ons.
For United, this is not just a new signing. It is the first clear statement of the Michael Carrick era. The former United midfielder, now leading the club from the dugout, has inherited a squad in need of fresh energy, especially in central midfield. Santos arrives as a player viewed by the club as both ready to contribute immediately and capable of growing into a key figure for years to come.
Santos joined Chelsea from Vasco da Gama in January 2023 for around GBP18million. Last season, he made 43 appearances for the London club, scoring three goals and providing four assists. Although still young, he has already built a reputation as a technically polished and physically reliable midfielder who can operate in different roles across the centre of the pitch.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, Santos described joining Manchester United as an incredible feeling and said the club had been represented by some of his biggest idols. He also pointed directly to Carrick as a major reason for his excitement, calling him the perfect coach to help him take the next step in his career.
United’s football leadership also made clear why they pushed to complete the deal early. Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Santos as an outstanding midfielder with strong technical qualities and the ability to influence the game at both ends of the pitch. He also described the Brazilian as a key target in an important position.
The timing of the transfer matters. United have been forced to reshape their midfield after Casemiro left at the end of his contract, while Manuel Ugarte suffered a long-term injury on international duty. With the club also previously considering Ugarte’s future, Carrick needed reinforcements quickly before pre-season plans could fully take shape.

Santos may not be the only midfield arrival. United are also reported to be pursuing Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans after walking away from a GBP39million move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. Reports claim the club have triggered a GBP35million release clause in Tielemans’ contract, and the Belgium international is said to be open to moving to Old Trafford.

If that deal goes through, United would suddenly have a very different look in midfield. Santos would bring youth, athleticism and long-term upside, while Tielemans would add Premier League experience, composure and passing quality. Together, they could form the basis of Carrick’s attempt to rebuild United around a more balanced and flexible midfield unit.
The situation is more complicated for Aston Villa. Losing Tielemans would leave Unai Emery’s squad light in central midfield, particularly with Amadou Onana suffering an ACL injury during the World Cup and Boubacar Kamara still working his way back from a knee problem. Villa’s summer plans had reportedly focused on strengthening the attack, but United’s move could force them to rethink quickly.
For Chelsea, selling Santos represents a significant profit on a player signed just over three years ago. For United, however, the pressure will be different. A GBP50million fee brings expectation, especially when the player is moving from a Premier League rival and arriving as part of a wider rebuild.
Carrick now has his first signing, and United fans have their first real glimpse of how the new era may look. Whether Santos becomes a star or merely another expensive gamble will depend on how quickly he adapts to the demands of Old Trafford. But one thing is already clear: Manchester United are not waiting quietly this summer. Their midfield rebuild has begun.
