‘Nervous’ Kate Middleton’s off-camera confession to Mary Berry after important move

Dame Mary Berry has revealed what happened when she did some filming with Princess Kate Middleton for a BBC show, and how the future Queen asked her for support

Renowned baker and National Treasure Dame Mary Berry has spoken about how she had to reassure Kate Middleton, 44, while filming a BBC programme covering the transfer of the Princess of Wales’ ‘Back to Nature’ garden to Wisley from Chelsea.

Dame Mary, 91, recalled during the RHS President’s Lunch how Kate had admitted she was feeling “rather nervous” at the time.

She described how the moment occurred as they were walking up a hill towards Kate’s garden in Wisley, sharing the four-word comment Kate made in the moment.

The former Great British Bake Off judge told the audience: “We were filming together for part of my BBC cooking programme, and I remember well walking up the hill to her garden in Wisley, and she said, ‘I’m feeling rather nervous’ as she grabbed my arm.”

Dame Mary added: “And I replied: ‘What do you think I feel!’ She was utterly charming and relaxed, and we ended up icing cupcakes.”

Dame Mary’s comments about working with Kate Middleton come after she was given an award of her own – the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship.

Collecting the gong at the BAFTA TV Awards earlier this month, she dedicated the award to her entire family, including her son, who tragically died in 1989 when he was just 19-years-old.

As she accepted the award, Dame Mary addressed the crowd, thanked her husband Paul and said: “And to our children, Thomas, William, and Annabel. William is in heaven, but I thank him.”

Speaking in more detail later on, Dame Mary, whose career spans more than five decades, admitted she wished her parents were alive to witness her accepting the award.

She said: “It is the most amazing award, such an honour. Aren’t I lucky? You just wish that your parents were still alive and you’d get on the phone and you’d say ‘guess what Mum!’ On Bake Off we won an award, and I also won an award for being best judge, but this is something quite different.”

Despite her latest success and glorious career, Dame Mary has said publicly that she intends to carry on, including starting her own YouTube channel, where she shares her recipes with her followers.

Discussing the forthcoming channel after the awards, she said: “We’re just starting on the YouTube channel and it will have all sorts of recipes – updated recipes, going in on detail, telling people where they’ll go wrong and hoping that they’ll get success following simple recipes.

“I’m open to all sorts of things! I love learning more about things that happen.”
