“There Is No Longer a Place Called Mum and Dad’s House.” — Lorraine Kelly Mourns the Loss of the Man Who Shaped Her World
Lorraine Kelly has shared the news every daughter dreads — the sudden passing of her beloved father, John, who died aged 84.
In a short but devastating Instagram post, the ITV legend wrote simply:
“Very sad news. My dad has died.”
But it was what followed that stopped fans in their tracks.
“I am mourning the man who bought me a telescope when I was five years old,” Lorraine continued. “He watched the moon landings with me. He taught me to be curious, to look up, to care about the world.”
A father who didn’t just raise her — but opened the universe to her.
“We Never Expected This”
Although John had been in poor health, Lorraine admitted the loss still came as a shock. She revealed that she and her younger brother Graham are struggling to come to terms with what has happened.
“Our priority now is taking care of my mum,” she said, gently asking for privacy as the family enters what she described as a “distressing time.”
A Lifetime of Quiet Influence
John, a former television service engineer, passed his love of science and astronomy directly to his daughter. Long before Lorraine became one of Britain’s most recognisable faces, she was a little girl staring at the stars through a telescope her dad had saved up to buy.
He and his wife Anne were married for more than 65 years and raised two children — Lorraine, now 66, and Graham, six years her junior.
Just weeks ago, Lorraine shared a tender throwback photo of herself with her dad during filming at The Mills Observatory — a memory that now feels heartbreakingly symbolic.
The Health Battles They Faced Together
Lorraine has previously spoken about terrifying moments when doctors feared she might lose her father after he battled a severe infection and heart failure.
In 2021 she revealed:
“We went through months thinking we were going to lose him. It was awful. They even thought it might be lung cancer, but it turned out to be a massive infection. He rallied — somehow, he always did.”
She has also been open about caring for her mother Anne, who lives with nephrotic syndrome, a serious kidney condition — even cutting back her working hours to be by her side.
Last year, Lorraine herself faced a health scare, sharing footage from her hospital bed after undergoing preventative surgery to remove her ovaries and tubes.
An Outpouring of Love
Within minutes of her announcement, tributes flooded in from across the television world.
Ben Shephard wrote: “So so sorry, Lorraine. Sending love to all the family.”
Charlotte Hawkins added: “Heartbreaking. So much love to you.”
Craig David said: “He was always your angel.”
Vanessa Feltz shared: “I know how close your family is. My deepest condolences.”
And Dawn French simply wrote: “Love wrapped around you.”
A House That Is No Longer Home
From the Gorbals in Glasgow to the heart of British television, Lorraine’s journey has always been rooted in family.
Now, she faces the quiet devastation she once described so painfully:
“There is no longer a place called Mum and Dad’s house. No one will be waiting to welcome me home anymore.”
And in those words, a nation feels her loss.
