Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 remains one of Hollywood’s strangest unfinished release stories.
The film exists. It has already been completed. It even premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, 2024, and later screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February 2025. But despite that, the sequel still does not have a confirmed wide theatrical or streaming release date.
Originally, Chapter 2 was supposed to arrive in U.S. cinemas on August 16, 2024, just weeks after Chapter 1. That plan changed after the first film underperformed at the box office. Warner Bros. and New Line pulled the sequel from the release calendar, and the second instalment has remained in limbo ever since.
That delay has made fans increasingly anxious, especially because Horizon is not meant to be a standalone movie. Costner designed the project as a sweeping four-part Western saga, covering years of American expansion around the Civil War era. Chapter 1 was only the beginning, introducing the world, the characters and the brutal frontier conflicts that were supposed to continue across several films.

For Costner, Horizon has always been deeply personal. He directed, co-wrote, produced and starred in the project, investing heavily in a vision he has carried for decades. But the box office response to the first film created a major problem. Releasing Chapter 2 too quickly after a weak opening could have made the situation worse, while holding it back risks losing audience momentum.
That is why the streaming question matters so much.
Chapter 1 has reached new viewers through home platforms, including Max and, more recently, Prime Video. Forbes reported in April 2026 that Chapter 1 had landed a Prime Video date while Chapter 2 still remained unresolved.

For now, there is no confirmed Prime Video, HBO Max or theatrical release date for Horizon: Chapter 2. Any claim that the sequel is definitely arriving on a specific streaming date should be treated carefully unless it comes from Warner Bros., New Line, Costner’s team or a major trade outlet.
The situation also affects the future of Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. Costner has spoken for years about wanting four films, and Chapter 3 has been described as being in production while Chapter 4 remains in development. But without a clear release path for Chapter 2, the larger saga faces uncertainty.
So when will Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 be released? The honest answer is: it has not been officially confirmed yet.

The most likely path may be a carefully timed streaming or limited theatrical release once the studio decides how to rebuild interest after Chapter 1. Until then, the second film remains completed but waiting — a major Western chapter caught between artistic ambition, box office reality and streaming strategy.
For fans of Kevin Costner’s frontier epic, the story is far from over.
But right now, the next chapter is still waiting for its moment.
