Joy Behar Announces Extended Break From The View As ABC Lines Up Guest Hosts
Joy Behar is taking a temporary step away from The View, and the news has quickly sparked reactions among longtime fans of the daytime talk show.
The 83-year-old co-host revealed that she will miss several upcoming episodes while traveling to Europe for her stage project, My First Ex-Husband. The update was shared on The View’s companion podcast, Behind the Table, where executive producer Brian Teta discussed Behar’s upcoming absence and explained how the show plans to adjust while she is away.
Behar’s break is not a sudden exit from the program, nor is it a sign that she is leaving the panel permanently. Instead, she is using the time to bring her play to European audiences following its New York run. According to reports, Behar will first travel to Paris before the production continues in London at the Boulevard Theatre in the West End.

For viewers who have watched Behar for decades, the announcement still feels significant. She has been one of the defining voices of The View since the show launched in 1997, apart from a break between 2013 and 2015. Her sharp humor, political opinions and quick reactions have helped shape the tone of the panel for nearly three decades.
While Behar is away, ABC is bringing in a mix of familiar and fresh faces to keep the show moving. Sheryl Underwood, best known from The Talk, is expected to guest co-host for two days. Journalist and podcast host Kara Swisher will also step in, while Ana Navarro is expected to appear more often than usual despite typically having a part-time role on the program.
The schedule change also means Whoopi Goldberg may be seen more frequently. Goldberg, who usually takes Fridays off, is expected to help fill some of the gap created by Behar’s absence. That adjustment has already caught fans’ attention, because the chemistry between Goldberg, Behar and the rest of the table has long been a major part of the show’s identity.
Behar’s temporary departure comes during a busy and sometimes turbulent period for The View. Earlier this year, Alyssa Farah Griffin took maternity leave, leading the show to rotate guest hosts. Behar has also dealt with previous absences, including time away after a foot injury last November. Still, her upcoming hiatus appears focused on her creative work rather than any behind-the-scenes trouble.
The timing has also drawn extra attention because The View remains one of the most watched and most discussed daytime programs in America. The show’s “Hot Topics” segments often turn into viral moments, especially when politics, pop culture or television drama collide at the table.
For Behar, however, this break represents something more personal: a chance to return to the stage and share a project she has helped create. At 83, she is not slowing down. Instead, she is taking her voice, humor and storytelling from daytime television to audiences overseas.
Fans may miss her presence at the table, but the message from the show is clear: Joy Behar is stepping away only temporarily — and The View is preparing for a lively few weeks without one of its most familiar voices.
