Marble countertops and floors can make any home feel elegant, bright, and timeless. But as beautiful as marble is, it is also one of the more delicate surfaces in the home. A small spill from coffee, wine, tomato sauce, lemon juice, or oily food can leave a mark if it is not cleaned quickly.
The reason is simple: marble is porous, which means it can absorb liquids. It is also made mostly of calcium carbonate, so acidic ingredients like vinegar, lemon, wine, and some cleaners can dull or etch the finish. That is why marble needs gentle care, not harsh scrubbing.
The first rule is to act fast. If food or liquid spills on marble, blot it with a soft damp cloth. Do not rub hard, because rubbing can spread the stain or scratch the surface. After blotting, dry the area with a clean towel.
For fresh stains, warm water and a microfiber cloth may be enough. Gently dab the area, then wipe and dry. If the stain is deeper, you can try a small amount of hydrogen peroxide on a soft cloth. Press it gently over the stain for a few minutes, then wipe clean. Always test it first in a hidden spot, especially on darker marble.
Another simple option is a baking soda paste. Mix baking soda with a little water until it becomes smooth. Apply it over the stain, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it sit for several hours or overnight. Then remove the paste with a damp cloth and dry the surface well. Avoid scrubbing, because baking soda can be mildly abrasive if used too aggressively.
For a gentler everyday clean, mix a small amount of mild soap with warm water. Wipe the marble with a soft cloth, then rinse with a clean damp cloth and dry immediately. Never leave water sitting on marble, as it can create dull spots or streaks.
To prevent future stains, use coasters, trays, placemats, and cutting boards. Keep acidic foods away from direct contact with the stone, and reseal marble surfaces when needed.
Marble can stay beautiful for years, but it needs the right routine. Clean spills quickly, avoid acidic cleaners, use gentle products, and always dry the surface after cleaning.
