Miguel Almirón has written his name into World Cup history — but for a reason no player would ever want.
The Paraguay midfielder became the first player to be sent off at a World Cup for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent, after a bizarre and controversial incident during Paraguay’s Group D clash with Turkey.
The flashpoint came just before half-time, with Paraguay leading 1-0 thanks to Matías Galarza’s lightning-fast early goal. Almirón was involved in a confrontation with Turkey defender Mert Müldür and appeared to cover his mouth while speaking during the exchange.
Under FIFA’s new rule, players can be punished if they deliberately obscure their mouths during heated confrontations, a measure introduced to help officials deal with potential abusive or discriminatory language that may otherwise be hidden from cameras and lip-reading.
