Prince Harry’s London U-turn sparks new palace frustration as Sussex trip descends into another royal storm

Prince Harry’s return to Britain has been thrown into fresh uncertainty after reports claimed Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will not travel with him to London, despite earlier expectations that the Sussex family could make a joint UK appearance.
The Duke of Sussex is now expected to arrive in the capital alone for a planned five-day visit, while discussions reportedly continue over whether Meghan and the children could still join him later elsewhere in the country. The change has added another twist to a week already dominated by confusion, security concerns and frustration behind palace walls.
According to the report, the sudden shift has left some royal insiders irritated, particularly after King Charles was said to have offered the Sussexes use of a royal residence in an attempt to make the visit easier. However, sources claimed the Palace had still been waiting for clear confirmation of Harry’s final plans.

The heart of the dispute remains security. Harry has long argued that his family requires adequate protection when visiting the UK, while official arrangements are assessed on a case-by-case basis rather than automatically provided around the clock. His camp has reportedly insisted that the issue is not accommodation, but whether appropriate protection can be guaranteed throughout the visit.
The latest decision means Archie and Lilibet may miss another chance to spend time in Britain, where they have not visited since the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. It also leaves any possible reunion with their grandfather uncertain, despite the King’s reported wish to see his grandchildren.

Royal commentator Ingrid Seward offered a sharp assessment of the situation, suggesting Harry appeared overwhelmed by anxiety about his family’s safety while also behaving in a way that has frustrated those trying to manage the trip. Her remarks reflect a wider mood among some critics who believe the Sussexes’ plans have become unnecessarily dramatic.
There is still a possibility that Meghan and the children could appear later in the week, particularly around Birmingham, where Harry is expected to support events linked to the Invictus Games. But no firm confirmation has been given, keeping the entire visit under a cloud of speculation.

The situation has also revived questions about Harry’s relationship with King Charles. The Duke has spoken in the past about wanting reconciliation and wanting his children to know their British heritage. Yet the repeated changes around this trip appear to have made an already fragile family situation even more complicated.
Sources close to Harry have suggested he feels trapped by the security position and deeply upset by the prospect of coming without his wife and children. Others, however, argue that the couple have built a wealthy life in America and should be able to arrange private protection when necessary.
Buckingham Palace has not commented publicly on what it considers a private family matter. But behind the scenes, the uncertainty has reportedly made planning difficult, especially if a royal residence is involved and arrangements need to be made in advance.
The Duke’s visit is expected to include public engagements connected to causes close to his heart, including veterans and young people. But once again, the headlines have been pulled toward the unresolved questions surrounding the Sussexes’ relationship with the Royal Family.
