Sara Cox has officially begun her new chapter as host of the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show — and she opened her first morning with exactly the kind of humour fans expected.
The much-loved broadcaster took over the famous breakfast slot after Scott Mills’ departure, marking one of the biggest changes to BBC Radio 2’s daytime schedule in years.
But rather than beginning with a stiff, formal introduction, Sara leaned into the pressure with a joke.
Opening the show, she told listeners it was Monday morning and their “favourite presenter” was feeling a little clingy and wanted some love. The line immediately set the tone for a debut that was warm, playful and very Sara Cox.
She also poked fun at herself with a mock “legal warning” while introducing her new listener feature, Surprise and Shine. Sara joked that if anyone claimed the game sounded similar to one she used to play on her teatime show, her lawyers were listening.
The new feature gives one lucky listener the chance to receive an early morning call and win a pair of socks featuring Sara’s own face on them — a brilliantly silly prize that quickly became one of the talking points of the show.
Sara also thanked Gary Davies, who had stepped in to cover the slot before her arrival, saying he had been “parachuted in” during a difficult period of change.
Her first guest was a major name too: Hollywood actor Tom Hanks, giving the debut an extra splash of star power.
For Radio 2 listeners, Sara’s arrival feels like the start of a new era.
She has long been one of the station’s most popular voices, having built a loyal following through her drivetime show and her relaxed, chatty connection with audiences.
Still, taking over breakfast is a different kind of pressure.
It is the show that starts the day for millions of listeners, and every change is watched closely.
