Police have confirmed that the body of a man was discovered in a Leicester park on Sunday morning, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Officers from Leicestershire Police were first called to Abbey Park at around 8.30am on Sunday (March 8) following reports that a body had been found in the area.

Shortly after 9am, members of the public reported seeing a large emergency response at the park, with police vehicles and officers gathering near the children’s play area. A section of the park was quickly cordoned off while officers began carrying out enquiries.

The presence of emergency services drew attention from visitors and local residents, with several people seen nearby as the investigation unfolded.

Later that morning, at around 11am, Leicestershire Police confirmed that the body of a man had been found in the park. At this stage, the man’s identity has not been publicly released and formal identification procedures are understood to be ongoing.

A spokesperson for the force said officers are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Detectives are currently gathering information and carrying out enquiries to determine what may have happened.

Abbey Park, located close to Leicester city centre, is one of the city’s most popular public green spaces and is frequently visited by families, walkers and joggers, particularly on weekends.

Police have indicated that the death is not currently being treated as suspicious, although enquiries remain ongoing. Routine procedures will be carried out, including further examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Residents living nearby said the discovery came as a shock, describing the park as usually quiet and peaceful.

Police have urged anyone who may have information that could assist the investigation to contact officers.
