Bonnie Tyler has been put in an “induced coma” after deteriorating following surgery. The singer, 74, best known for hits like Holding Out For A Hero and Total Eclipse of the Heart, took ill in Portugal and was initially said to be stable and recovering well.

But in the latest update, the star – who is due to tour Europe later this year – is now said to have taken a turn for the worse and is currently at the Faro Hospital where she is unconscious and breathing with the use of a ventilator.

A spokesperson for the singer said in a statement: “Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery. We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time please. We will issue a further statement when we are able to,”

Earlier this week, a spokesman for the singer explained that Bonnie was “recuperating well” and a quick recovery appeared to be on the cards.

The statement said: “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

Bonnie has split her time between Faro in Portugal – where she owns a property – and South Wales for a number of years. The singer decided to spend more time in the Algarve after falling in love with the place when she worked on an album there.

The singer has been open about her health over the years and recently revealed her knees were her main health issue.

“I’m still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything. I do home Pilates, only 20 minutes a day – it’s something I can do in my hotel rooms,” she said of her fitness regime.

“I have had problems with my knees; I didn’t have new knees, I had what they call washouts [a surgical knee procedure], which turned out to be very successful. So, hopefully that will last for a long time.”

Last year, Bonnie, who released her 18th studio album, titled The Best Is Yet to Come, in 2021, told The Mirror that she had no plans to retire and whilst she has “slowed down”, she doesn’t want to give it up for good – and hopes to be on the road for a long time to come.

She said: “I started singing when I was 17 and I never thought I’d still be doing it at this age. I’ve slowed down a little bit, but I know now that I will never retire,” she explained, “Even though I was so lucky because I was in Portugal when the first lockdown was announced, by the end of it, I’d had enough. I was going crazy. I needed to get back out there on the road!”
