Amy Doherty’s parents say their only daughter had ‘bubbly character and fun loving spirit’

The parents of Amy Doherty have said their “hearts are crushed with disbelief, sadness and pain” after her death on Saturday.
The 28-year-old was found “badly injured” by police in a house in the Summer Meadows Mews area of Derry.
The mother of two was taken to hospital where she later died. Police have opened a murder investigation and they are questioning a 30-year-old man on suspicion of her murder.

In a statement, Ms Doherty’s parents, Patrick and Sharon paid tribute to their “beautiful, only daughter”.
“She is the best mother Rhea and Ronan could ask for. She loved her brothers Shane and Ryan.”
“Our hearts are crushed with disbelief, sadness and pain. Amy’s life revolved round her love and care of Rhea and Ronan.
In her daily work she cared for the sick and elderly,” they added.
“Her bubbly character and fun loving spirit lifted the hearts of all who met her. Please pray for us all at this time.”
First Minister ‘deeply saddened’

Northern Ireland’s First Minister offered her condolences to the family of Ms Doherty.
Michelle O’Neill said in a social media post: “I am deeply saddened by the tragic news coming from Derry of the murder of young mother of two, Amy Doherty.
She continued: “In less than three weeks two more young women have lost their lives in heart-breaking circumstances.
“Everyone must stand up and tackle the scourge of violence against women and girls.
“My heart goes out to the family, friends and community in Derry as they come to terms with this latest tragedy.”
Derry representatives told UTV the community has been left “shocked and saddened”.
‘Unimaginably, distressing time’

On Monday, PSNI Detective Inspector Ferguson said: “Amy was found, badly injured, at around 10.20am on Saturday.”
“She was taken to hospital by colleagues from the Ambulance Service but, sadly, passed away a short time later.
“At 28 years old, Amy was just a young woman. And my thoughts are, first and foremost, with her family and friends at this unimaginably, distressing time.”
She continued: “A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder, and remains in custody at this time.
“Our enquiries are continuing, and the local community will continue to see a police presence in the Summer Meadows area over the coming days.
“I am appealing to anyone with information to contact us on 101, quoting reference 469 of 21/03/2026.”
