Lee Mack has fronted The 1% Club since 2022, and one former contestant has opened up about what it was truly like to meet the beloved presenter. The popular quiz show puts the intelligence of 100 contestants to the test, challenging them to apply logic, reasoning and common sense to a series of increasingly tricky questions. Get a single question wrong and you are immediately eliminated from the competition.
Reflecting on his time on the programme, former contestant Ryan Alexander revealed he had been quietly dreading word puzzles making an appearance. “I think I’m very good with puzzles and maths, and the final 1% question was a letter question,” he recalled, reports the Mirror.

“My brain doesn’t focus very well on words and things, and it was basically a question about clocks and what word was represented, and as soon as the word thing was mentioned, I overthought everything.
“I ended up running out of time and you’re not allowed to verbally give your answer, as you have the tablet.”
Nevertheless, Ryan described the overall experience as “surreal”, telling OLBG: “I got to attempt to do something that not a lot of people have done.

“The experience to me was not as valuable as the cash, because that would have been an additional bonus. Being a part of the show was fantastic.”
He went on to add: “The person who sat next to me in the studio, she loved it just as much as me, and it also was good because when we aired, we had like a big watch party with my family in the house.

“I was later recognised in Morrison’s by someone behind the till, which was strange. Then randomly at a wedding someone introduced me to their mum and she recognised me from The 1% Club.”
Recalling what it was like meeting host Lee, Ryan commented: “Lee was exactly how you expect him to be.
“He was approachable, he was laughing and joking between the questions, he was asking people a bit more about their stories, and then at the end, when obviously I wasn’t successful, he’d come over and commiserate. He was really nice.
“Lee wasn’t just there to do a job, he actually seemed to care and was quite happy for Zoe, who won on the day. It was such a fun day.”
