Coronation Street has addressed Jack P. Shepherd’s future after reports claimed the David Platt actor is taking a break from the ITV soap.
The update sparked immediate concern among fans because Jack has played David for more than two decades, becoming one of the most familiar and important faces in Weatherfield. Since joining the soap as a child actor in 2000, he has grown up on screen and carried some of the Platt family’s biggest storylines.

But fans do not need to panic.
The latest reports suggest Jack’s break is temporary, not a permanent exit. He is expected to spend time away from filming as he prepares for the birth of his first child with wife Hanni Treweek. The couple are currently counting down to a huge family milestone, and Jack is reportedly taking paternity leave to support Hanni as they welcome their baby.
The timing also links to Jack’s recent hair transplant update. The actor recently revealed a dramatically shaved look on his On The Sofa podcast with Corrie co-stars Colson Smith and Ben Price, joking with them as he showed the early stage of his latest procedure. Reports say he timed the procedure to line up with his planned break from the soap.
For viewers, the word “break” can feel alarming, especially during a period when Coronation Street has already seen several cast changes and exit storylines. David Platt is not just another character. He is part of one of the show’s most iconic families, with deep connections to Sarah, Nick, Audrey, Max, Lily and Shona.
That is why any suggestion of Jack stepping away immediately gets fans talking.
David has been at the centre of huge storylines over the years, from his troubled teenage years and family clashes to grief, marriage drama, parenting struggles and darker emotional plots. Jack’s performance has made David one of Corrie’s most layered characters — sharp, damaged, funny, unpredictable and deeply human.
The good news is that this update appears to be about real-life family time rather than a dramatic goodbye.
Jack and Hanni married in July 2025, and the baby will be their first child together. Jack is already a father to three children from previous relationships, making this another major chapter in his family life.
Away from the cobbles, Jack has also been enjoying a busy period, with his podcast, public appearances and personal milestones keeping fans invested in his life beyond Weatherfield.
For now, David Platt may be off screen for a while, depending on how the soap handles Jack’s filming break.
But this does not look like the end of David’s story.
After more than 25 years in Coronation Street, Jack P. Shepherd remains one of the soap’s biggest stars — and fans will no doubt be ready for David’s return whenever he steps back onto the cobbles.
