The Third Hour of TODAY is heading to Williamsburg, Virginia later this week, marking an exciting historic tour as the show celebrates the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence. However, Craig Melvin, the veteran co-host, will not be joining the adventure.
Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer will lead the Williamsburg special, exploring key landmarks, local restaurants, breweries, and the cobblestone streets where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed in 1776. Actor and comedian Patton Oswalt steps in as Craig’s replacement for this special edition, adding what Dylan describes as “serious star power” to the team.

Craig, 52, joked on air, “I’m being phased out,” as the team prepared for the historic broadcast, highlighting the shift in hosting duties while maintaining his signature humor. Patton, a College of William & Mary alum, will guide the team through his favorite local spots, creating a fun and unique viewer experience.
The Williamsburg trip promises an engaging mix of history and entertainment, with TODAY inviting fans to follow along as the hosts bring the city’s Revolutionary past to life. Ed Harris, President and CEO of Visit Williamsburg, expressed excitement for the collaboration, noting the show’s national reach as an ideal way to showcase Virginia’s historic triangle: Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown.
Fans can expect a lively, informative, and entertaining special as the TODAY hosts step into America’s history, even as the familiar presence of Craig Melvin is temporarily missing from the team.
