Good Morning America paused its broadcast for a Princess Catherine update which is likely to leave Meghan Markle furious. The 44-year-old touched down in Italy on Wednesday (May 13) in what has been widely viewed as one of the most significant moments of her gradual return to royal duty.
It marks the Princess of Wales’ first international trip since revealing her cancer diagnosis in 2024. Upon her arrival in the northern city of Reggio Emilia, Princess Kate was met with loud cheers as thousands of fans lined the plaza and watched from windows at Piazza Prampolini. “A rock star welcome for Princess Kate as she makes her comeback on the international stage,” Good Morning America reported. “Thousands turning up to say, ‘Ciao’.”

Princess Catherine received a real royal welcome during her solo visit to Italy, her first international trip since revealing her cancer diagnosis three years ago.
Thousands lined the plaza and watched from windows at Piazza Prampolini in the northern city of Reggio Emilia,…
Presenting live from Italy, ABC News presenter Maggie Rulli said: “We are seeing these crowds everywhere we go, people waiting for the princess.”
“The princess, now on her second day of her fact-finding mission in Italy, here to better understand Reggio Emilia’s world renowned education methods, part of the princesses interest in the early years of a child’s development,” the GMA report continued.
ABC News’ Royal Contributor Victoria Murphy shared the significance of Princess Kate’s positive reception from fans in Italy, saying: “Such a warm reaction from the Italian people. They seemed to have really taken her to their hearts and I think this trip is a reminder just how much of a global superstar she is with the Royal Family.”

A local explained how Princess Kate greeted them in Italian, while another recalled how the mum-of-three spent the time speaking to other members of the crowd.
Princess Kate’s trip will no doubt be compared to Meghan and Prince Harry’s recent visit to Australia, which was criticised by many.
The couple were accused of using their “faux royal tour” to make money – a claim they have denied. However, TalkTV presenter Samara Gill claimed what Harry and Meghan were doing on the “pseudo-royal tour” was bolstering their own relations and lining their pockets.

The commentator told Royal Exclusive: “This is a trash for cash tour. I see it no other way and it’s so craven going to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne… posing for photos with children with cancer, going to homeless shelters with your $25,000 watches on and giving out frittatas to homeless women – all to bolster your own public image when we know Meghan has registered As Ever in Australia. She wants to sell those pots of jam over there.
“There is no diplomatic arc to this. It’s all for them.”
