A heartbreaking tragedy in southern France has left a community in shock after two young children lost their lives during the country’s severe heatwave.
The children, aged two and four, were found unresponsive inside a family car in Carpentras, in the Vaucluse region, as temperatures climbed close to 40°C. Emergency services were called to the scene, but despite efforts to save them, the children could not be revived.
The case has become even more painful because early reports suggest the family had been trying to cope with the intense heat. The mother had reportedly taken the children swimming to cool them down before returning to the family home.
What happened next remains under investigation.
According to reports, the car was parked at the children’s grandmother’s property. Prosecutors initially said the children may have climbed into the vehicle and become trapped without their mother realising. However, a police source later claimed the mother may have forgotten they were there while she dealt with shopping.
Authorities have now opened a manslaughter investigation, while autopsies are expected to help determine the exact cause and circumstances of the children’s tragic loss.
The mother, said to be 33, has reportedly been taken into care by emergency services because of her emotional condition. Officials have not been able to fully question her yet.
Neighbours described the scene as devastating. Many said the family had only recently moved into the area and that the younger child had been due to attend a local daycare programme.
The tragedy comes as France faces one of its most dangerous heatwaves in years. Multiple departments have been placed under high-level weather alerts, schools have changed timetables or closed, and officials have warned families to take extreme temperatures seriously.
Experts repeatedly stress that the inside of a parked car can become dangerously hot within minutes, even if the vehicle is in the shade or the windows are slightly open.
