How to Clean Your Microwave Quickly With a Simple Kitchen Trick

The microwave is one of the most-used appliances in the kitchen, but it is also one of the easiest places for food splatters, grease, and unpleasant smells to build up. Just a few rounds of reheating soup, sauce, pizza, or leftovers can leave dried-on messes inside that become harder to wipe away over time.

The good news is that you do not need harsh chemicals or heavy scrubbing to clean it. One of the easiest ways to freshen up a microwave is by using hot steam. Steam helps loosen stuck-on food, while vinegar or lemon can help reduce odors and make the inside easier to wipe clean.

Start by preparing a microwave-safe bowl. Add about 2 cups of water, then mix in 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. If you do not like the smell of vinegar, you can use fresh lemon juice instead. Lemon not only helps with cleaning but also leaves a fresher scent in the kitchen.

A small but useful trick is to place a wooden spoon or a toothpick in the bowl. This gives bubbles a place to form as the water heats, helping reduce the risk of superheated water suddenly bubbling up when the bowl is moved.

Place the bowl in the microwave and heat it on high for a few minutes, until the water gets hot and steam fills the inside of the appliance. When the microwave stops, do not open the door right away. Let the bowl sit inside for a few more minutes so the steam can continue softening grease, food splatters, and dried-on spots.

When you open the door, be careful because the bowl may be very hot. Use a kitchen towel or oven mitts to remove it safely. Take out the turntable if your microwave has one, and wash it separately with dish soap and warm water. For the inside of the microwave, use a microfiber cloth or soft sponge to wipe the ceiling, walls, bottom, and inside of the door.

For stubborn spots, dip your cloth into the warm vinegar or lemon water and wipe the area again. If grease has been sitting for a while, press the warm cloth against the stain for about a minute before wiping. Avoid using metal scrubbers or sharp tools because they can scratch the interior surface.

The microwave door also needs attention, especially the handle and edges. These areas often collect fingerprints, grease, and steam residue. You can wipe them with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild dish soap, then go over them again with a clean cloth to remove any leftover residue.

To keep your microwave cleaner for longer, cover food before reheating it. A microwave-safe cover can greatly reduce splatters. If food spills or splashes, wipe it up once the microwave cools instead of letting it dry for days.

Depending on how often you use it, you should clean your microwave about once a week or whenever you notice bad smells. For families that use the microwave daily, quick wipe-downs between deeper cleans can save a lot of time later.

With just water, vinegar, or lemon, you can clean your microwave in a simple, affordable, and more kitchen-friendly way. It is a small home hack that can make a big difference in any busy household.
