Donald Trump has threatened to inflict a savage blow on Sir Keir Starmer by reversing the UKโ€™s trade deal with the US. The Economic Prosperity Deal was regarded as a triumph for Sir Keir when it was agreed in May 2025. It included a reduction in tariffs on British cars and steel products exported to the US, and made it easier for UK farmers to sell beef in America.

Sir Keir said at the time: โ€œThis historic deal delivers for British business and British workers protecting thousands of British jobs in key sectors including car manufacturing and steel.โ€ But Mr Trump has now suggested he could change the deal, following a series of bitter rows with the Prime Minister.

The President said that America had given the UK โ€œa good trade deal, better than I had toโ€.

In what appeared to be a threat to the agreement with Britain, Mr Trump suggested the deal โ€œcan always be changedโ€.

He made the comments to Sky News as he continued criticism of Sir Keir for refusing to support the US war against Iran.

Asked for his thoughts on the special relationship, Mr Trump replied: โ€œWith who?โ€

Sky then clarified they meant with the UK, to which the president reiterated his disappointment that Britain and other NATO allies had not joined the war with Iran โ€œwhen we needed themโ€.

He also told Sky News an agreement to end the war with Iran is โ€œvery possibleโ€.

The president has reportedly said talks to end the conflict could resume in the next โ€œtwo daysโ€.

But a breakdown in the political relationship between the US and Britain will not have an impact on the Kingโ€™s upcoming state visit to America, Donald Trump has insisted.

Charles and Camillaโ€™s four-day trip to the US at the end of the month comes amid a worsening transatlantic relationship, after verbal attacks by President Trump on Sir Keir and other NATO allies for not joining his war in Iran.

The historic visit between April 27 and 30 โ€“ the Kingโ€™s first visit to the US as monarch โ€“ will mark the 250th anniversary of American independence and herald the start of celebrations across the US.

Speaking to Sky News only hours after Buckingham Palace released details of the Kingโ€™s US itinerary, Mr Trump described Charles as a โ€œgreat gentlemanโ€.

โ€œIโ€™ve known him for a long time. Heโ€™s wonderful, wonderful person,โ€ the US president added, according to the broadcaster.

Mr Trump insisted his strained relationship with Sir Keir would โ€œnot at allโ€ overshadow the royal visit.

Sir Keir has insisted he will not be โ€œpressuredโ€ by Donald Trump into joining the US and Israeli military campaign against Iran.
