ITV Dancing On Ice’s Christopher Dean’s major health scare that left him wondering if he’d ‘live or die’ Both Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean announced they will retire at the end of the year and will leave their roles as head judges on Dancing on Ice

For decades, Christopher Dean was known as the man who seemed almost indestructible on the ice. Falls, injuries, exhaustion — he skated through them all. But nothing prepared the Dancing On Ice legend for the moment he was forced to confront something far more terrifying than a bad landing.

Now 67 and officially retired, Christopher has revealed that behind the scenes of the glittering ITV show, he once feared his life was about to be turned upside down.

The pain that wouldn’t go away

The warning signs appeared back in 2015 while he was filming Dancing On Ice. What started as severe stomach pain refused to ease, leaving the skating icon increasingly worried.

A routine medical check led to a colonoscopy — something Christopher admits he had never expected to reveal anything serious. But doctors soon found a 2cm growth inside his colon.Torvill and Dean in tears as they perform final and 'emotional' Dancing on Ice routine | HELLO!

Suddenly, the word “polyp” became part of his everyday vocabulary.

His consultant explained that the growth looked like an adenoma — a type that can become cancerous if left untreated. A biopsy was ordered. And with that, Christopher entered what he now describes as the most agonising fortnight of his life.

“I didn’t know if I was going to live or die”

As he waited for the results, the former Olympic champion began mentally preparing for the worst. He believed major surgery might be inevitable — surgery that could remove a large part of his digestive system and permanently change the way he lived.

“I had to come to terms with my own mortality,” he later reflected. “Not knowing whether you’re facing cancer makes everything else in your life feel suddenly very small.”

For two long weeks, he lived in limbo — continuing with work while privately fearing that his future was about to collapse.ITV Dancing On Ice's Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean issue apology and make promise to fans - Manchester Evening News

The call that brought everything into focus

Then came the news he had been desperately hoping for.

The growth was benign.

The relief, he says, was overwhelming. And it changed how he viewed everything — from the aches of a lifelong skating career to the way he approached his health going forward.

What once felt like career-ending injuries suddenly seemed insignificant compared to the possibility of losing his life.

A farewell tour with deeper meaning

Years later, as he and longtime skating partner Jayne Torvill prepared their emotional farewell tour, the experience took on an entirely new weight.

Their final performances are now being captured in an ITV documentary titled Torvill and Dean: The Last Dance, offering fans an intimate look at the end of a 50-year partnership.

Behind every graceful glide is a man who once believed he might never skate again — not because of injury, but because of something far more frightening.

And as Christopher steps into retirement, he does so not just as a sporting legend… but as someone who understands just how fragile life can be.
