Jude Bellingham gave a brutally honest reaction after being named Player of the Match in England’s disappointing 0-0 draw with Ghana at the 2026 World Cup.
The Real Madrid midfielder was handed the award after another intense night in an England shirt, but he immediately played down the honour. Instead of celebrating the individual recognition, Bellingham admitted he did not feel he had done enough to deserve it.
In his view, the award should have gone to one of Ghana’s players after their disciplined defensive performance frustrated England for the full 90 minutes.
Bellingham said it had been difficult to get into the game, with Ghana sitting deep, staying compact and making life uncomfortable for Thomas Tuchel’s side. England dominated possession and pushed hard for a breakthrough, but the final touch never arrived.
The 22-year-old’s comments summed up the mood around England’s performance. This was a night of control without conviction, pressure without precision, and possession without a goal.
Nico O’Reilly came closest when he struck the crossbar late on. Harry Kane could not turn in the rebound, while Marc Guéhi also saw an effort cleared off the line as Ghana survived the late pressure.
Bellingham was eventually substituted in the second half, with England searching for more attacking rhythm. Even so, he was still chosen for the match award, a decision that surprised many fans — including the player himself.
The midfielder also described it as another case of “second-game fever” for England, who have now made a habit of following strong tournament starts with frustrating second group matches.
For Ghana, the draw felt like a tactical success. For England, it raised fresh questions about creativity, tempo and how they break down low defensive blocks.
Bellingham’s honesty may have earned respect, but England know their performance must improve quickly.
