A brand new trailer for Keeley Hawes’ “unique and compelling” Channel 4 drama has just landed. Described as such by the broadcaster’s commissioning editor for Drama, Gwawr Lloyd, the six-part series – written by Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne – sees Hawes star as devoted nun Anna, alongside Paapa Essiedu’s Catholic priest David.

The trailer teases the heartbreaking anguish of both Essiedu and Hawes’ characters, whose longing for one another tugs at their devotion to God. The synopsis, which expands further on their struggles, reads: “Anna and David are deeply committed to their work in the church and in their community. Neither expected to fall in love

“But when they do, both are forced to wrestle with what it means for them, their vows, and their relationship with God. Falling is a witty, moving, contemporary romantic drama that is as honest as it is full of heart.”

Essiedu praised Thorne’s first ever love story in a press statement, where he shared: “Falling is a story that has Jack Thorne’s singular talent of mining the sublime out of the ordinary running all the way through.”

Hawes also said that she was “thrilled to be taking on the role of Anna”, while expressing delight at working with Essiedu.

Further pictures have been shared, showing the wider cast starring alongside Essiedu and Hawes.

Jason Watkins is among the extended cast and will play the role of Peter, as well as Heartbeat‘s Niamh Cusack as Francesca, The Pact‘s Rakie Ayola as Muriel, My Policeman‘s David Dawson as Phil and Gavin & Stacey‘s Adrian Scarborough as Francis.
