The search that gripped two countries has come to a heartbreaking end.
Spanish authorities confirmed Friday that the body recovered from the waters near Port Olímpic in Barcelona has been identified as James “Jimmy” Gracey, the 20-year-old University of Alabama student who vanished earlier this week during a spring break trip.

Maritime police located his body in approximately 13 feet of water near the same beachfront area where he was last seen leaving Shôko nightclub around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning. Just one day earlier, his wallet had been found floating nearby — a discovery that intensified the search along the coastline.
Now, officials say there is no indication of foul play.

“Everything points to it being an accidental death,” Mossos d’Esquadra police stated, adding that the investigation remains active pending autopsy results.
Gracey, originally from Elmhurst, Illinois, had traveled to Barcelona to visit friends studying abroad. After becoming separated from his group inside the nightclub, he never returned to the Airbnb located roughly two miles away.

A witness reportedly told investigators they saw Gracey walking toward the rocky coastline near the club shortly before he disappeared. Authorities believe he may have fallen into the sea.
His father had flown to Spain as search efforts intensified, standing alongside local law enforcement as marine units combed the water. The heartbreaking identification came just hours after the recovery Thursday evening.
An autopsy has been ordered, though final results may take weeks.
Back home, tributes are pouring in.
Gracey — known to friends simply as “Jimmy” — served as chaplain of the Alpha Phi Chapter of Theta Chi fraternity at the University of Alabama. Fraternity leaders described him as a “young man of deep faith” and someone who consistently put others before himself.
“There are no words to describe the pain of losing our beloved brother,” chapter president Cavin McLay shared. “His smile and attitude were infectious. I am a better person for having known him.”

In a family statement, relatives called him “a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend,” adding that they are struggling to process the unimaginable loss.
What began as a desperate international search has now become a story of grief, faith, and remembrance. For those who knew him, Jimmy Gracey’s light will not be defined by the final chapter — but by the joy and compassion he brought to everyone around him.
