Sky News was interrupted for a breaking news update on Wednesday morning – and it isn’t looking good for Sir 𝘒𝘦𝘪𝘳𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘳. Presenter Wilfred Frost shared that the latest inflation figures have risen.
In a huge blow to the Prime Minister, who is constantly battling the cost of living crisis, he said: “We have some breaking news. Inflation has just come out for the month of March, therefore taking into account the war in Iran for the first time.” He claimed that it was in line with expectation, “which is an updated expectation in light of the war”. The TV host then revealed that the figure had risen to 3.3.%, up from 3% in February and January. However, Wilfred then went on to say that by this point in the year, inflation should have been starting to head more towards 2% but “we have ticked up once again”.
Wilfred then summed the situation up by saying: “This was meant to be one of those months with next month in particular, that gets us back to target which is close to 2%. Instead, in February we were at 3% and in March we have risen to 3.3.%.”
His co-star, Sophie Ridge, then added: “And I guess the fear is that this is the beginning of a trend, rather than a blip.”
“Exactly,” he responded. “I think 3.3% from 3%, you might say in light of the war is not that bad. But the war started in the start of the month and energy prices, gas prices, take a few weeks to respond.
“All of April will be pricing in this sort of thing.” He warned: “It is going to be cumulative from here.”
Those at home watching commented on social media, with a mixed range of thoughts. One person fumed on X, formerly Twitter: “I hope it reaches 17%. UK voters need to start holding Starmer and the Labour Party accountable!”
Another echoed: “The Starmer network is already at full speed, blaming everyone but Starmer!”
