Balogun’s absence could become a serious problem for the USMNT. He had been one of the team’s most important attacking players and already had three goals at the tournament. Without him, Pochettino will have to rethink his frontline for one of the biggest matches of the campaign.
The controversy has also raised a wider question about consistency. Earlier in the tournament, other heavy challenges were not punished in the same way, leaving the USA camp feeling that Balogun has been treated harshly.
