Day 12 of World Cup 2026 delivered everything fans love about the tournament: teenage brilliance, angry pundits, giant-killing drama and one historic African celebration.
Spain produced the loudest statement of the day, crushing Saudi Arabia 4-0 to move back into control of Group H. After a frustrating goalless draw against Cape Verde in their opener, La Roja needed a response — and Lamine Yamal delivered it almost immediately.
The Barcelona teenager scored in the 10th minute, giving Spain the early breakthrough and setting the tone for a far sharper performance. Mikel Oyarzabal then struck twice before half-time, while a Saudi own goal early in the second half completed a comfortable win. Yamal was withdrawn at the interval, but his job was already done. Spain looked faster, more direct and far more dangerous.
Belgium, meanwhile, are suddenly in trouble.
The Red Devils were held to a 0-0 draw by Iran in Los Angeles, leaving them without a win after two matches. Alireza Beiranvand was outstanding in goal for Iran, making key saves to frustrate Belgium’s attack. Cape Verde then provided the emotional punch of the day. The World Cup debutants followed up their shock draw with Spain by holding Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw in Miami. Kevin Pina scored Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup goal with a superb long-range free kick, before Hélio Varela punished a defensive mistake to rescue another famous point.
Uruguay now face serious pressure, with only two points from two games and Spain waiting in their final group match.
Egypt also enjoyed a landmark night, beating New Zealand 3-1 for their first World Cup victory in 92 years. Mohamed Salah scored and assisted as Egypt came from behind to take control of Group G.
Day 12 proved one thing clearly: this World Cup is refusing to follow the script.
