Nigella Lawson is set to join The Great British Bake Off, following the surprise decision by Prue Leith to step down after nine years on the judging panel.

Industry insiders say contract talks are now reaching their final stages, with the 66-year-old food icon ready to sign on the dotted line as Prue’s long-anticipated replacement. If confirmed, it would mark one of the most eye-catching casting moves in the show’s history.

Nigella has been whispered about as Prue’s successor since as far back as 2024, when Prue — now 85 — quietly reduced her workload by opting out of the celebrity spin-off. Now, all signs point to those rumours becoming reality.

Filming for the next series is due to begin in April, with Nigella expected to take her place alongside long-standing judge Paul Hollywood. Sources close to the production describe the move as a “sure-fire hit”.

“Nigella is recognised worldwide,” one insider revealed. “She’s already got the cheeky banter down to a tee, with her trademark innuendos and playful patter — exactly the kind of energy Bake Off thrives on. Prue has been wonderful, but Nigella would be an instant fan favourite.”

They added: “All being well, she’ll be heating up the famous tent very soon.”

Nigella’s most recent UK television series was Nigella’s Cook, Eat, Repeat, which aired on BBC Two in 2020. Since then, she has appeared as a judge on MasterChef Australia and fronted a handful of festive specials — making this potential return to a major UK format all the more tantalising for viewers.

Prue, who joined Bake Off in 2017 after replacing Mary Berry, has judged more than 400 challenges across nine series. During her time on the show, she spoke candidly about the lengths she went to stay camera-ready — including skipping meals and briefly trying weight-loss injections, which she later abandoned due to unpleasant side effects.

Her tenure was not without drama. In 2017, Prue was left “mortified” after accidentally revealing the series winner early, having misjudged the time difference while tweeting from a holiday in the Himalayas.

Confirming her departure, Prue said: “Bake Off has been a fabulous part of my life. I feel very lucky to have been part of it. I’m sure I’ll miss working with Paul, Alison, Noel and the teams at Love Productions and Channel 4 — but now feels like the right time to step back.”

Made a Dame in 2021 for services to food, broadcasting and charity, Prue leaves behind what Channel 4 chief Ian Katz described as an “indelible mark” on the show, while hinting that she may yet return for other projects.

Love Productions added in a statement: “From her genuine expertise and encouragement of the bakers to her ability to drop innocent innuendos, Prue will always have a piece of Bake Off’s heart.”

A Bake Off spokesperson confirmed only that “the new judge will be announced in due course” — but with Nigella’s name now louder than ever, fans are already bracing themselves for a bold new era inside the tent.
