The Prince of Wales, a long-time supporter of the national team, said he was ‘gutted’ after England were beaten 2-1 in Atlanta, where the defending champions struck twice late in the second half to crush hopes of a first World Cup final appearance in decades.

England had looked on course for one of the biggest nights in modern national football history when Anthony Gordon fired Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead after a tense, goalless opening half. The goal sparked scenes of belief among fans in the stadium, in pubs and at fan zones across the country.

But the optimism did not last. Enzo Fernandez levelled for Argentina in the 85th minute, before Lautaro Martinez completed the turnaround in stoppage time. In just a few brutal minutes, England’s dream of ending 60 years of World Cup hurt was replaced by familiar heartbreak.

William posted an emotional message on X after the final whistle, thanking the players and staff for what he described as an incredible tournament. He said England had given everything, adding that the squad’s fight and belief had inspired the country and urging them to hold their heads high.

His words echoed the mood of supporters who were devastated by the result but proud of the team’s overall campaign. Fans had dared to believe after England battled their way into the last four, only to be stopped by an Argentina side still carrying the aura and experience of reigning world champions.

The defeat was especially painful because England appeared to have the match in their hands. Supporters outside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium described the first half as tense, then admitted they thought momentum had swung England’s way after Gordon’s opener. Instead, late substitutions and a more defensive approach left many questioning whether the team sat back too soon.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer also reacted with disappointment, saying the result was not what the country had hoped for but praising the passion and energy shown by the players throughout the tournament.

There were difficult scenes after the match, with Argentina supporters celebrating wildly and some trouble reported outside the stadium. Police were seen leading several people away, while fans back in Britain watched in disbelief as another major tournament ended in agony.

For William, the message was simple: heartbreak, pride and gratitude. England may have fallen short of the final, but the Prince of Wales made clear that the team’s spirit had still left a mark on the nation. The dream is over for now, but the belief, once again, refuses to disappear.
